Gratitude is an essential component of a more positive mindset. The state of gratefulness puts you in a more humble and less ego-driven and less-narcissistic frame of mind. You’re being grateful for something outside of yourself.
Sometime though the practice of gratitude can be a bit incremental. By that, I mean that you focus on the little things around you. Like you’re grateful for that delicious sandwich you had for lunch. Or you’re grateful for your wonderful family and loved ones. That’s all fantastic. Genuinely great things to be grateful for. That kind of gratitude and gratefulness puts me in a chilled, content frame of mind. Sometimes though, you just want the nuclear option.
So ask yourself “in what ways am I a lucky bastard?”. There’s always someone alive in the world who is much worse off than you. There’s likely billions of people who have it worse than you. Imagine being that guy in a Brazilian prison, or that person who has to walk 6 miles just to drink some water than may kill them, or that person who’s been homeless for 10 years with mental illness. Simply put, your situation doesn’t warrant complaining about. As Gary Vaynerchuk consistently says, you being alive was a 400 trillion to one shot. 400 trillion to one!! You’re just ridiculously lucky to be alive.
Once that monumental fact has sort of sunk in, try adding these in. I’m guessing that the vast majority of you reading this have 4 limbs that work. You have your eyesight, your hearing. You have at least average intelligence. You probably had access to a decent education, particularly when judged against the education systems of much of the developing world. You quite probably live in a free country. You have a roof over your head and you probably don’t have to think about where your next meal or that of your family is coming from. Forgive me if any of these do actually apply to you. I’m sure that you can still think of things that you’re lucky for. And if not, just come back to the Gary Vaynerchuk point above. You being alive was a 400 trillion to one shot!!
You can breathe fresh air. You can likely see beauty in nature. You can hear great music. You can read the great books. You can eat cheese and spaghetti carbonara (insert any delicious, not costly food!). You can have sex. You drink a cold drink on a hot day. You are a lucky bastard. Internalise this. Now go out and enjoy your day, you lucky bastard.
Let me know in the comments just how lucky you are!
